Game Over: Not!

In a tough blow for a great local business, Game Room Essentials has been forced to close by the Port Adelaide Enfield Council, effective immediately. In short, a Council inspection found fire hazards and other unnamed safety concerns; the proprietor, Danny Daly, offered to work with the Council to improve the venue but his pleas went unheard. The council’s concerns are certainly valid but there are several aspects to the story that make it pretty tragic. Danny has been in business for 18 months following a redundancy from Holden, and made it through the theft of $30,000 worth of pinball machines. Anyone who has started a business from scratch knows how hard it is to get going from a standing start, and this kind of bombshell is just devastating.
This is a highly successful business, as well. It was hailed as a top attraction by Trip Advisor, and with nearly 5,000 likes on Facebook its impact on the community is clear. The outpouring of support from this community is also good evidence for its value, with many citing it as as a positive, healthy, and affordable entertainment option for kids. It also helps to keep the culture of the Golden Age of Gaming alive, and those of us with a few grey hairs now have a place to relive the experience of playing pinballs or arcade machines in a genuine arcade environment, and even share that experience with the next generation.
