Ready…. FIGHT!: Battle Arena Melbourne
Posted on May 21, 2015
Here’s something cool: this weekend (22-24 may, 2015), an awesome eSports competition is taking place right here in Australia. It’s a bit far to take the Game Truck, but if you’re already in Melbourne it’s worth checking out.
Battle Arena Melbourne, run by Couch Warriors, is a good sign for competitive gaming in Australia: BAM is in its seventh year now and attracts over 300 attendees. It focusses particularly on fighting games: that is, 2-dimensional brawlers where each player occupies a different side of the screen, and they battle it out with tactics, strategy, and mind-boggling combinations. Staples of the genre are game franchises like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken, but there are many more, each allowing for a different kind of playstyle.
These guys are serious, too: you can see they bring their own control pads; the competition is linked into larger finals elsewhere; there are cool prizes up for grabs; and the event brings in other aspects of game culture such as cosplay competitions. The event is sponsored by BenQ and Warner Brothers Entertainment, among others, so it gets a lot of attention.
I love seeing gaming culture come alive at events like these. What do you think: could Adelaide support an event like this? Battle Arena Adelaide? (BAAd?)
